BUCHAREST INTERNATIONA AIRPORT HISTORY

1940 - 1944 - On the present field of Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport used to be an air base of the Third Reich;

Up to 1965 - Existing infrastructure : a runway of 1200 m and annexed buildings; it was used by the Air Force;

1965 - The growth of the air traffic imposed the construction of a new airport (by that time, the air traffic was exclusively covered by Baneasa Airport). Thus, it was chosen the location of Otopeni air base. The process of transformation of what was to become Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport got the green light. The works were focused mainly on:
- modernization of the existing runway, as to be capable to take a load of 45 t/wheel;
- extension of the runway up to 3500 m, exceeding at that time the runway of the old Paris Orly Airport;

- modernization of the airport's power plant;
- construction of a new passenger terminal .

1969 - The cargo terminal was temporarily used to board the passengers;
- August, 2 - on the occasion of President Richard Nixon's visit in Romania, it was inaugurated the VIP lounge building;

1970 - April, 13 - the inauguration of the passenger terminal, with a processing capacity of 1.2 million passengers per year;

1986 - The airport was subject to a new phase of development, aiming the following goals :,br> - construction of a second runway (3500 m) and related taxiways, increasing thus the capacity of the airport up to 35-40 aircraft movements per hour;
- modernization of the airport lighting system.

1991 - The airport started to run a vast investment program - Development and Modernization Program - together with a Romanian - Italian joint-venture, including companies of high prestige in the field of aviation constructions (Italstrade, SEA Milano, CCCF SA);

1992 - Becomes regular member ACI (Airport Council International);

1997 - December - the goal of the first phase of development, the "International Departures Lounge", with a processing capacity of 1000-1200 passengers/peak hour, opened its gates, surprising by its special architectonic charm and by its functionality; the boarding lounge has five airbridges facilitating the direct access to the aircraft;

1998 - June- the passengers of TAROM flight to Paris inaugurated the modern system of boarding bridges;

1999 - May - the signing of "Bucharest International Cargo Center" setting up document, meant to meet the actual requirements of the cargo air transport;
- November - back to work: the works of the second phase (1999-2002) of the Development and Modernization Program started; the old terminal, considered the "Cinderella" of the airport, started to be refurbished and reorganized;
,br> 2000 - November - the inauguration of the "International Arrivals" passengers flow On the threshold of the third millennium, Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport will offer to the World a new image, becoming thus one of the most modern airports from the East of Europe, with an airport infrastructure meeting the international standards.
